Chinese spend more than Russia as tourists in Czech Republic
Spending of Russian tourists dropped to 16 percent of the total.
Global Blue mediates VAT refunds to tourists from countries outside of the EU.
The company expects the share of Chinese tourists to be growing further in the following quarters. The average size of one shopping grew from Kč 15,935 to Kč 19,404 by Chinese tourists and from Kč 6,836 to Kč 7,172 by Russian tourists.
“The average spending of a tourist from Hong Kong doubled year on year to Kč 28,000, the highest average spending of tourists from countries outside of the EU,” said Global Blue executive Jiří Macas.
Russians buy the most often in the Czech Republic fashion and clothing (65 percent), watches and jewels (13 percent), electronics (4 percent) and glass (3 percent).
Chinese prefer jewels and watches (41 percent) and the popularity of these goods increased in a yr/yr comparison.
“Watches and jewels saw an increase by 13 percentage points in 2015 against the third quarter of last year. This may be caused by the inflow of renowned watch brands, in particular in the Pařížská Street,” said Zuzana Roubíčková of Global Blue.
Clothing makes up 40 percent in the shopping of Chinese tourists and Czech glass 16 percent.
The number of Chinese tourists coming to the Czech Republic increased by a fifth to 211,000 last year. According to estimates of the Czech Travel Agencies Association (AČCK), their number will increase to some 270,000 this year.
New flights that Chinese Hainan Airlines launched from Prague to Beijing in September should help. They are expected to serve to some 60,000 passengers annually.
