An opinion poll conducted by Novus and published by Swedish Radio News in the early hours of Saturday showed that the Sweden Democrats have reached their highest support figures ever for this poll, at 19.1 percent. The country's two largest parties, the Social Democrats and the conservative Moderates, obtained 25.8 percent and 23.2 percent respectively.
"The other parties are competing about reducing the refugee influx. It's undeniable that reality has caught up with the established parties," Åkesson said.
He dismissed claims that the Sweden Democrats would take the hit now that the country's largest parties have started to tighten asylum rules.
"Our influence in Sweden's migration policy has never been as big as it is now. Our role is more important than ever," Åkesson said.
