“I can confirm that a suspect in the murders of Prague taxi drivers was discovered and will be prosecuted. No other information will be provided,” Prague Municipal State Attorney's Office spokeswoman Štěpánka Zenklová said, according to daily Mladá fronta Dnes.
The victims were reportedly shot after the suspect hired a taxi and, in the last two cases, asked to be driven to an isolated area at the outskirts of the city.
The local Taxi association welcomed the news cautiously. “It is a definite relief but it is premature [to say so] as we don’t have any confirmation from the police. If it is true, then I thank the police for their hard work,” Taxi association chairman Karel Holcman told MfD.
The first victim, identified as Petr S., was found in Lužická Street in Prague 2.
The April victims were identified as Milan P. and Daniel C. They were found about 90 meters apart on a dirt road in Uhříněves in Prague 22.
Police developed a sketch of a possible witness or suspect in July 2014, but it is unclear at this time if the suspect who was caught resembled the sketch.
A reward for Kč 100,000 was offered for any information leading to an arrest. It is also unclear if anyone has claimed the reward.
Taxi association head Holcman said that taxi drivers increased their security after the murders by installing cameras and carrying defensive weapons.
