Iceland Disabled Women Protest against violence

A group of disabled women yesterday demanded that the summer home be closed in which sexual assaults allegedly took place in the past, RÚV reports. The group delivered its demands to the Ministry of Welfare, the Ministry of the Interior and to Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament. They also demanded an inquiry into the operation of summer homes for the disabled.

What sparked their protest is partly media discussion of two women who claim the owner of a summer camp for the disabled sexually assaulted them. The case was prevented from going to court. Research has also shown a high rate of violence toward disabled women.
Above all, the women who assembled today want to show gratitude and support for the two women who came forward with their accusations.
